Whitney Elizabeth Houston, nota come Whitney Houston (Newark, 9 agosto 1963 – Beverly Hills, 11 febbraio 2012), è stata una cantante e attrice statunitense.
Viene universalmente riconosciuta come una delle più iconiche, popolari e talentuose cantanti di tutti i tempi, spesso chiamata semplicemente "The Voice" per le caratteristiche uniche della sua voce, soprannome datole da Oprah Winfrey. A detta di molti artisti e critici, quella di Whitney è la più grande voce femminile della storia della musica.
Il suo grandissimo successo negli anni ottanta ha permesso l'apertura di mercati fino ad allora preclusi alle cantanti di colore. Con essi la cantante ha dominato le classifiche mondiali, in particolar modo la Billboard Hot 100, nella quale ha piazzato sette singoli consecutivi alla numero uno, battendo il record di cinque appartenente a Diana Ross & The Supremes ed ai Beatles. Le sue vendite complessive di album, singoli e video sono attualmente di oltre 200 milioni di copie, e risulta essere l'artista femminile dal maggior successo di sempre dopo Madonna.
È stata una delle donne di maggior successo discografico, la quarta donna per numero di vendite negli Stati Uniti, con circa 55 milioni di dischi certificati dalla RIAA. Detiene anche il primo posto nella classifica degli artisti di colore di maggior successo insieme a Michael Jackson.
Nel 2008 il Guinness dei Primati ha dichiarato Whitney l'artista più premiata e popolare al mondo. L'artista ha guadagnato 6 Grammy Awards e detiene il record per numero di American Music Awards, avendone ricevuti 22 in tutto.
Nel 2012 il Guinness dei Primati ha citato nuovamente la cantante come la prima e unica artista ad avere 12 brani contemporaneamente nella U.K. chart, il che risulta un primato mondiale.
Whitney Houston è stata inserita alla 34ª posizione nella lista dei 100 cantanti più grandi di tutti i tempi della rivista Rolling Stone.
Dopo un periodo di declino negli anni 2000 dovuto a durissime vicende personali e cause legali contro l'ex marito, nel giugno 2009 la casa discografica Arista Records ha annunciato l'uscita dell'album dal titolo I Look to You, pubblicato in Italia ed in Germania il 28 agosto 2009 e negli Stati Uniti il 31 agosto successivo.
È morta l'11 febbraio 2012, in una stanza di un hotel a Beverly Hills. La causa della morte è stata identificata nell'annegamento accidentale nella vasca da bagno, in seguito a un'eccessiva assunzione di droghe e a una malattia vascolare (l'aterosclerosi).
